I’m amazed at how many business people don’t keep their promises.
Most the time when people break their promises they don’t “mean” to. But it doesn’t matter. People will evaluate you based on what you do or don’t do. Not on your intentions.
So be careful to commit to things unless you can follow through with them. Don’t be the salesperson who promises the moon and then disappears after you get your commission.
Make sure your clients are well taken care of.
This all seems so basic, right? I mean, why are we even talking about this? Isn’t “keeping your promises” just a given?
You would think, right?
Then why is it so rare? Why are so many “professionals” unreliable? I don’t know, but I suspect it’s because they don’t really care.
But this is good news for you.
One way to set yourself apart is to simply do what you say you’re going to do. If you’re going to email something over today then do it. If you’re going to have a project done by a certain deadline then do it. Just do what you say you’re going to do.
This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being reliable and trustworthy.
Again, this all seems so fundamental but it’s important to remember. Especially if you want to pursue excellence at what you do.
